Legal Question in Family Law in California

Status Conference documents

If I do not have an attorney, will I still be able to express my wishes at a status conference? I'm not sure if my husband has an attorney. The lady who prepared my legal documents to file my response said it isn't necessary to bring and documentation to the Status Conference. She said it's a very informal meeting and I should verbally let the court know what I am asking for. Is this correct?

Re: Status Conference documents

This is correct. However, keep in mind that the court is not required to entertain any request that has not been previously made in the moving papers.

As an example, this means that if a party is asking for custody, they cannot show up at a status conference and ask for custody. The court will require that the party will have filed a document asking for custody. Generally though, if a party has filed papers making a request, the party can reitterate that when in front of the judge.

The court will want to know what's happening (procedurally) with the case. I doubt that the judge will make any orders regarding your issues.
