Legal Question in Family Law in California

Step parent wanting to adopt children

I have two children from a previous marriage. They live in California and I live in the South. They have told me they would like their step father to adopt them.

I realize I would be giving up my parental rights. I have not seen them in many years.

The step father and his wife are unable to afford to have this done. Can you let me know what this would cost to have done in California.

Thank You

Re: Step parent wanting to adopt children

By all means, do it. An adoption will terminate your obligation to pay child support. You may want to offer to pay for the adoption. You will always be the biological father and the legal status will never be able to take that away from you or your kids.

Re: Step parent wanting to adopt children

It sounds like you are willing to consent to the adoption. If that is the case, the cost of a step-parent adoption is relatively low, at least as far as attorney costs are concerned. The county will do an adoption investigation and that is usually done on a sliding scale depending on the parents' income but it usually is no more than $800.00.

I would be happy to discuss the matter in greater detail with you if you would like to give me a call. I could explain the procedure and all the costs in detail.
