how to stop an adoption

I'm writing from central america, my ex and I got divorce in we agreed to spend equal time with our son(court papers signed)first years with me his father back in El Salvador and the rest back with the mother in the states, I send my son back in 2001 for vacation with the promese to be send back after a month she never send him back I kept in touch by phone but in sept 01 they moved,I lost touch; back in march I got papers from the court for an adoption the new husbend is trying to adopt my son I can't prove I try to find him so public defender says the best way to is with an open adoption, is this the only way, is there place I can write in sacramento that can help me, thanks for your time, sincerely:Dan Zaldivar
