I was given a subpoena and how do i know if it is real?

Check with the court. It should have a case number on it, and must have the name and address of the court that issued it. The court clerk will be able to tell you if it really is a case on file in that court or not.

I agree with Mr. McCormick. Additionally, the court should be able to tell you (and from looking at the form) if the subpoena was issued by an attorney. If a party is not represented by an attorney, then they have to get court approval to issue a subpoena, which are actually issued by the court. All of the information you need should be on the front page of the subpoena.
