Legal Question in Family Law in California

I wish to sue my ex-wife

My ex-wife and I were married for almost 5 years, and are now legally divorced.

I have a trust fund within my family, and we borrowed from the fund to buy a house, after which I had lost my job 3 months after purchasing our home.

I helped my ex-wife start a new business as a manicurist using my then good credit, and the money from my trust fund to get her business started.

We then had to sell our home in order to survive and stop our mortgage payments, where most of the money we made on the sale of our home went to her ex-husband and 4 children behind my back. Wiping me out financially.

I'd now like to sue her for what I believe should be her half of the money that was deducted from my trust fund. Somewhere in the area of $ 20,000 US Dollars

Since small claims court in California appears to only be a maximum of

$ 5000, here's my question.

Is it possible to sue for the maximum allowable in small claims court, then also sue in small claims court again for the rest ? or would I need to get a lawyer to sue for the total amount ?

I don't have a job right now, so your advise would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Tony
