Legal Question in Family Law in California
tax advice question regarding divorce
Hi,
I am a performing artist. I am getting divorced. We are filing our taxes separately. I usually file a schedule c for business expenses for my entertainment expenses and income. I have both that and w2 income.
My question, some expenses came out of the joint account, some my private accounts. I am only itemizing my business expenses, not personal expenses.
Can I claim all expenses on my schedule c, or would it be best to claim only the ones that came out of my private account?
Can I safely do this this year? If I file this way, does it leave me open in the future to litigation or renegotiating the settlement?
I am wondering in conjunction with both money and intellectual property. I am wondering if this would connect them?
I filed this way prior to the marriage. But not during the marriage
Would it be best for me to file a straight return from a divorce/ looking to the future standpoint?
Your advice is most welcome.

Re: tax advice question regarding divorce
Since you're getting divorced, it's probably a good idea to file separately. Whether you should claim deductions on your schedule a or c is probably something your tax preparer should answer.
