Legal Question in Family Law in California

My two teenage kids (16 and 15) don't have any regular contact with their father . My question is if I die do they automatically go to their father ? Them being the age they are do they have any say in wether they would want to live with him, and is ther anything legally I can do to prevent this . Both children have stated they would run away if sent to their fathers.
