Legal Question in Family Law in California

Termination of child support

My son was due child support until 18 years old, or graduation of high school. His mother made

him join the Marines (USMC) one day after his 17th birthday. Since he was not living at home, and being supported by the Marine Corps a year before his 18th birthday, do I owe the child support from his 17th to 18th birthday, which I have already paid. I paid this because I was not told by his mother that he had gone in the Marines that early, and every time I called for him (In Detroit area), I was given an answer like ''He's at work, or out with his friends.''

Please advise me if I have the legal right to return to court to collect the last year of child support.

Re: Termination of child support

When your son joined the Marines he became self supporting and emancipated. Therefore no further child support was due to mom for that child.
