Legal Question in Family Law in California

Hello there,

I was legally separated 3 years ago, my wife has all the paperwork. I want to move ahead with a divorce, now my wife can't find the paperwork. Do I have to go through the lawyer I originally signed the separation papers or is it in a main system? Also how long does it take and how much does it cost? Thank you

If you did a full blown, court ordered legal separation, most if not all of your relevant paperwork is on file with the court. You would need to go to the court clerk's office of the court that granted the legal separation and ask for a copy of the file. Copying fees vary by court, so you will have to check with the clerk on what the cost will be.
