Legal Question in Family Law in California

Thought I was Ex-Wife

My husband divorced me in 2001 (so I thought) and remarried in 2003 in Vegas. I found out in early November of this year that he was dying of Bone Cancer. I went to visit him at his home and he told me he divorced his wife in 2004 and that we were still married. I tought it was the medication he was on until I got home and went on line and found out the divorced was never completed. I was/am mortified. Well he passed away on 12/13/08 (today he would have been 63) and now the mortuary is calling me and I really know nothing about him since I have had no communication with him in 7 years. I have not called them back and don't want to because I left him in 2001 when I found out he lied to me to get me to put his company in my name knowing that he owned EDD and State taxes. Now for the last 6 years I have been paying the IRS bceause of his lies. I do not want to pay for (can't afford to anyway) his burial. Do I have to since I looked on like and found his marriage information for his 2003 wife. Help!

Re: Thought I was Ex-Wife

You should consult with an attorney in your area, it may be possible that since you were separated at the time you accrued these debts you are not responsible for them. Your second marriage will have to be taken care of becuase it appears to be a bigamous marriage at this time.

Good luck, as always please contact a lawyer in your area before taking legal action.
