Legal Question in Family Law in California
Toddlers need a place to stay
There are two little girls, age 2 and 4, who are not related to me who badly need a place to stay. My understanding of the situation is the mother walked out on them months ago and the father was recently arrested on serious charges. There are no legal custody agreements in place. My ex-husband has been taking care of them but he's in a bad position. No one has been honest with the mother about what's going on with the father. She does not know the severity of the charges against him. I don't know the situation with grandparents, but I assume they are not interested since my ex-husband, who is also no relation to the girls, has been taking care of them. What is my legal stance when taking in these girls? Can I get in trouble? I also have full custody of 2 year old son.
Thank you!

Re: Toddlers need a place to stay
Are you interested in becoming their legal guardians?
If so, file a petition for guardianship.
Take good care of those sweethearts.
