Legal Question in Family Law in California

I just saw on tv a reality show called sister wives, where a man in Utah is married to 4 wives and I have read in the Bible that the lord god had granted men 3 to 4 wives, this being the case how many wives can a man have?

He can have one, or he can have as many as he wants to go to jail for having. Bigamy and polygamy are crimes in every state, including Utah. The reason the man on the Sister Wives show is not prosecuted is because he is actually only legally married to his first wife. The rest of the "marriages" were only "spiritual unions." They never took out, solemnized, and filed any marriage license or followed any other official proceeding to make the marriages legal, except the first one. So he legally only has one wife.
