Legal Question in Family Law in California
verification that a marriage occurred
Hi,
I need to verify whether a certain individual is married to a certain other individual. i have both their names and i have his birth date. but i have not
been married to him or had personal relationship with him. i am not sure which state they might have gotten
married but don't mind going through some busy work
in order to verify that information.
Does every state have a central location where every marriage that occurs within its jurisdiction would be recorded there?
if yes, how can one verify the marriage of an individulal without having ever had any relationship or any claims of any sort on this person?
if not, any other way an average person without any legal claims on the other person able to get a copy of marriage certificate or atleast check whether or not this individual is married?
if one can access this information, how certain can one be that these results are not fraudulent?

Re: verification that a marriage occurred
It depends solely on the jurisdiction and you will need to know where they were married. Most jurisdictions consider marriage and divorce info to be of public record so you should have no trouble accessing the info. Keep in mind however that some jurisdictions allow parties to enter into common law marriages (DC is one of them) and so the parties may be married without a formal ceremony or documentation.
