Veterans disability benefits attachment

Is there a federal or state law that prevents courts/judges from awarding a portion of a veteran's monthly VA disability benefits to a divorcing spouse?? We were told those particular benefits are protected for the veteran only!

There is abundant case law that says that the disability portion of the retirement is not subject to division as community property.
