Legal Question in Family Law in California

welfare assistance

My pregnant ex-girlfriend moved from TX to CA and got on welfare assistance with me listed as the possible father. I am not sure at this time that I am the father because there was one other person with her. I was told that if I was listed as the father, that the state of CA would come after me in TX and seize all property in my name. Is this possible?

Re: welfare assistance

It has been my experience that California will forward the case to Texas and proceed with the child support case there. You will have the option of requesting a dna test regarding paternity.

Re: welfare assistance

Not quite to that extreme. If you're found to be the father, whether you are or not, you will have to pay child support for the child. You're supposed to get notice of any legal proceedings in CA, but those papers don't always get where they're going on time if at all. This is a bit of a sticky wicket. Try to keep tabs on her, find out when and where the child is born and see if you want to contest paternity. Good Luck.
