Legal Question in Family Law in California

I want to be with a woman that has kids in Louisiana and she is very afraid that her ex will try to take her to court to take her kids away but hes not around at all as if he dont care and i love these kids is there a law saying i cant be in their life even though he hast been for less than a year I love this woman and her kids with all of my heart and want to be with her but i dont want to make her loose her kids please tell me is there something i can do.
