Legal Question in Family Law in California
I want to write a letter to the judge on my sister's behalf for her upcoming custody trial. Everything thus far has been very one-sided in favor of the ex-husband. My sister's lawyer is just phoning it in. I would like the judge to know what is really going on. Would that be a good thing to do?

No. It is improper to make ex parte communications with the judge. You may jeopardize your sister's case if you make illegal communications to the court. If you have relevant evidence, her lawyer needs to submit it in a formal declaration or by live testimony if there will be a hearing with witnesses. If your sister is not getting adequate representation, she should hire another lawyer.
