Legal Question in Family Law in California

I'm writting for someone that lives in California. In 2007, he sponsored his wife and her son from Colombia. They now have moved into the US. He is now looking at getting a divorce. Will he have to pay child support since the father is listed as unknown?

It is not impossible, but not very likely if he did not adopt the child and did not hold the child out as being his. If he let the world believe the child was his and acted as if he was, there is some authority for not letting him just walk away from that upon divorce, but generally a person has no responsibility for step-children upon divorce. There may, however, be INS law on the subject based on his sponsorship. He would have to ask an immigration lawyer about that.
