Legal Question in Medical Leave in California
Child Disablility
I hope you can help.....My son has ADHD, and several other emotional and mental special needs. I am constantly having to take time off work to get him to a doctor appointment or therapist. I am a single mom and his father lives in another part of the state and unfortunatly cannot be trusted to help with these errands. I am afraid I will be fired because of this difficulty. However, I can't ignore my sons special needs and his need for treatment. I need to work a full-time job because I need the benefits.
Please tell me if there is some type of help for people in my situation. I'm going insane........
thanx

Re: Child Disablility
If this is a large company (over 50 employees) and you have been with the company, full-time, for over a year, you are eligible for family medical leave, which means you may take up to 12 weeks off to take care of your son's disability needs.
You will need his doctor to provide you with medical confirmation that your assistance is necessary for his care. If that is possible, you should discuss with your employer what arrangements may be made to set up a schedule. You need not take off a full day or even consecutive days.
The downside is that the employer does not have to pay you for the time you take off, assuming you are an hourly employee, and this is only a temporary fix. In the long run, you will probably have to make other arrangements.
