Presumably, your are referring to the FMLA, which is a federal law that permits qualified employees to take up to 12 weeks off from work for a serious personal illness or to care for a close family member.

State disability is a benefit qualified people, who are unable to work due to a disability, may receive from the State of California.

The two are different.
