my step dad is having cancer surgrey & I nned to drive my mom& him to the hopist, 80 miles away. Can I be denied FMLA for the day?

FMLA and its California equivalent requires employers to allow qualified employees to take time off to care for parents (including step-parents) who are seriously ill. The statute does not specifically address driving them to the doctor and I believe this may be a stretch to interpret it this way. If you take a more active role in your step-father's care, you would be in better position to be allowed to take the time off.
