Legal Question in Medical Leave in California

Good afternoon,

I have been using my mom's husbands last name since I was a kid and am now an adult. I want to change my last name legally and am not sure how to go about this. All my legal documention and identification are in this last name; however I want to make it official.

I heard this can be an expensive process, yet there are several site's online that state you can do this for free. I'm not looking to do this for free, but would like to save money if possible.

I appreciate you taking the time to read my request for assistance in this matter. Thank you and have a nice day.

Thank you.

I assume the court will charge a filing fee, which could be up to $352. I have not done it but the process should be fairly easy, especially sice no one wil be opposing yur request. But if all the documents covering you are in that last name, that is you official last name. Anyone in the USA can call themselves whatever they want as long as it is not to defraud someone. You do not need a court order to do that. If all documents have you with the last name you want to adopt, what document exists that need to be changed. Seems to me that that is your official last name already.
