Legal Question in Medical Leave in California

pay during maternity leave

Are employers required to give employees pay or some percentage of pay while they are on maternity leave or is that decision at the discretion of the employer?

Is there some kind of compensation through state welfare programs for mothers and/or fathers who take maternity leave? if you miss more than 3 days of work due to illness/disability in California isn't some percentage of your pay provided by the state?

Re: pay during maternity leave

You may be eligible for State Disability ("SDI"), which you pay for when your employer deducts this insurance out of your paycheck, but the employer itself is not obligated to pay anything. If you have accrued vacation or sick time, you may opt to use that until exhausted. Also, check to see if the employer offers short-term disability insurance, which may pay a portion of your salary, if maternity is covered.
