Legal Question in Civil Litigation in California

2 friends and I booked an international trip and I paid hotel portion on my credit card that all parties knew was non refundable. Due to an emergency I had to cancel my trip but offered my portion of funds to both friends for them to enjoy their trip. I would be out my portion. However because both friends then chose not to continue with trip because I cancelled they want me to pay their portions of the hotel as well, yet we all lost same dollar amount for hotel. How would this hold in small claims?

That depends on what the three of you agreed to, since their claim would probably be for breach of contract. It would also depend on what effect your absence would have had if they had traveled without you. For example, if they would have had to pay additional fees or expenses that they couldn't afford (e.g., to hire a driver in a country where you're licensed to drive but they're not), then the court could find that your cancellation prevented then from going and that it wasn't really a matter of choice. Depending on the facts, your friends' damages might involve more than just the hotel bills.

That's the best I can do with the information you've given us.
