Legal Question in Civil Litigation in California

I asked a friend if he can hold some expensive items for me temporarily at his storage facility. One month later I asked him if I can pick up my items and he said that since he could not make the storage payment and they will put the contents of the storage up for auction. Do I have any recourse to claim what is mine in this situation?

Contact the storage company and see if you can make the payment to bring it current.
