Legal Question in Civil Litigation in California

Can boyfriend who partially supports me be held responsible for me?

I live with my boyfriend, in his home. He pays the household expenses, as well as food, entertainment, etc. I work, and support myself as far as paying my bills, but I do not pay him any rent. His insurance agent (and probably his lawyer) told him not to let me use his address as my own because he can be held liable if anything should happen to me, such as getting in an accident, owing money, etc. (he comes from a wealthy family). This discussion came about when I lowered my car insurance coverage (his insurance agent helped me with this). She told him to make sure I am not tied to him in any way because if I got into an accident, they could come after his assets. I found this hard to believe so I asked a family member who is a lawyer, and was told it most likely could not happen, but if for some reason it did, his insurance would cover it. What is the truth?
