Legal Question in Civil Litigation in California

How do I get a business to pay for damages outside of their insurance?

How do I go about getting a business owner to repay for the additions I had done to my vehicle to upgrade it for sale prior to taking it to his shop for service, after his insurance has classified the car as salvaged and paid the insurance claim, yet I have approximately twenty-six hundred dollars ($2,600 USD)in receipts for work which was done prior to his mechanic totalling my car?

Do I have any legal grounds or should I let it be? This incident has left me without a vehicle and now I have to pay for a rental until I can locate a car I can afford.

Thank you.

if you did not sign a release for the insurance payment you can go to small claims court.
