Legal Question in Civil Litigation in California

I have a California civil claim and one of the Defendants is based in another state but operates in California. This company refuses to give me its address for service....what can I do?? It is a debt collection agency based in Minnesota. Thanks!

First, you can check the records of the California Secretary of State to see if the corporation has a business address in California. You can also use the Internet to search for a CA address, such as by checking telephone directories that are online.

You could also serve the agency in Minnesota.

If necessary, you can hire an attorney on a limited-scope basis to provide you advice and assistance in the service of the out-of-state defendant.

They are only going to show up with the California Secretary of State if they are a corporation or LLC and have complied with California law regarding registration of out of state corporations and LLCs. As Mr. Perry's answer suggests, you are just going to have to do some old fashioned detective work to find an address. If you have reason to believe they are a corporation or LLC I personally would start with the Minn. Secretary of State or whatever the equivalent office is in that state for registering corporations and LLCs.
