Legal Question in Civil Litigation in California
In California Small Claims Court is it legal for an attorney to represent a defendant through correspondence between himself and the plaintiff? I know he can't represent the defendant in court.

Yes. It is only in court that attorney representation is prohibited.

Remember, if the defendant loses in small claims court, the defendant may appeal and may be represented by an attorney. Recovery of limited attorney's fees may then be sought by the prevailing party.
