Legal Question in Civil Litigation in California

Collecting prize money in court!

I represent and manage a professional computer gaming

team that competes at local, regional, national, and

international events. These events are essentially

tournaments of varying sizes that pit the competing 5

man teams against each other for some given prize

package. For background info I should probably provide that our team is owned by myself and is an incorporated company in the state of California. However the players reside in Canada and compete in events there as well as here in the US.

The event in question was held in Canada but was

advertised and marketed to teams all across North

America. The event drew attendance from other US teams

as well. Most notably the first place team (entirely US

based) and our second place team won $4000 CDN and

$1000 CDN accordingly. This prize money was never paid.

Would it be reasonable, possible, and relatively

painless to file this matter in a small claims

California court? Would it be best if I acted as an

individual (i.e. myself the owner of the team and agent

representing) or as the head of the incorporated body?

Re: Collecting prize money in court!

Do they even have small claims courts in Canada?

Consulting with a Canadian attorney is your right course of action.

This is a case that can only be paid in Canada. The event took place in Canada. The "agreement" to pay winners is to be performed in Canada by a Canadian organization. Please consult a canadian attorney. Also, if the organization belongs to some group or board then you might be able to petition that entity for help.
