Legal Question in Civil Litigation in California
Coming forward with information for a fee
There is a civil court case (a person vs. a corporation) that I have evidence, information and everything necessary to actually help the defendant (the corporation). In fact, it would completely halt the entire case.
Without knowing what I know, the defense has no leg to stand on and they don't even know I exist.
Is it legal to go to the attornies for the defense with my information in exchange for a fee?
And if I do end up testifying for them, I fear reprocussions from the plaintiff. (not physical, but definitely making my life a living hell. i.e. calling childrens services, suing me or anything else that can be done) Would I have some sort of safety?

Think about it this way. If you were sitting on a jury and someone were to testify, and the plaintiff's astute lawyer asks "How much did defendant pay you for your testimony," won't the witness lose all credibility of she stated "several hundred dollars"? You're entitled to the witness fees of $35/day (I think it is), plus mileage of somewhere around 31 cents per mile for travel to and from the deposition and trial.
