defamation of character

would I be able to take any kind of legal action if a department store accused me of shoplifting and I was arrested inside the store and cause of this incident I spent four or five days in custody.

If you are innocent and are 100% sure of it, then there is a case. You can recover damages. Contact and attorney in your area to discuss the matter further.

If you are innocent, it could be a good case. I had a case like this where the client claimed he was falsely arrested, and then the videotape turned up halfway through the lawsuit showing the client stuffing a salami down his pants. Not to say this is you, but I am very wary of false arrest cases ever since then.
