Legal Question in Civil Litigation in California

Disgruntled Groom

My friend got married recently and changed his IRS filing status at work. The Human Resources administrator subsequently told my friend's supervisor about the marriage. My friend is a very private person and was quite offended when he found out that information was shared with his co-workers. He had not planned on telling anyone.

Is it possible for him to sue this company?

Re: Disgruntled Groom

I don't see how he could. Invasion of privacy is a valid basis for a lawsuit, but the fact that someone got married is public information. Since the general public can review marriage records, no one can claim that his marital status is confidential information. Revealing public information cannot be deemed invasion of privacy.
