Legal Question in Civil Litigation in California

Dog Question

While I was walking my dogs, a group of dogs approached us. My dog attacked one of these dogs. When I gave the owner of the dog money for half of the amount of the vet bill incurred as the result of the injuries caused by my dog, she refused it, and is demanding that I pay the full amount, and is going to sue me. Our dogs were on another person's property when this occured. Am I obligated to pay half or the full amount of the vet bill?

Re: Dog Question

Generally, for a dog bite, you are responsible for the full amount. My recommendation is that you pay the full amount but ask for a full and unequivocal release of all claims stemming from the incident.

We can prepare such a release for a nominal fee if you are so inclined.

Best of Luck!

Re: Dog Question

You are responsible for all damages caused by your dog, regardless of whether you were negligent or not. It's called strict liability.
