Legal Question in Civil Litigation in California

ex-boyfriend and I broke up a month ago. Prior to that, he sold his car and used the money as down payment towards another car. Couldn't get the loan so he asked me to get it for him. Didn't really want to but got it anyway. Now that it's over, I asked for the car since it's under my name and didn't want him to mess up my credit. Got the car from him but now he's asking for the down payment plus for a stereo system that he had installed or he's taking me to court. Does he have a case against me ?
