In a civil case, one person files a lawsuit against another. In a criminal case, the people of the State of California allege that the defendant violated a law and could face a fine and/or incarceration. If yours is truly a criminal case, you would need to do a lot more research to be able to defend yourself. You can find form answers for a civil case on the Judicial Council's website: http://www.courtinfo.ca.gov/forms/. You would have to figure out what kind of answer to file. If it's a collection case, you would want Answer--Contract. If it's for a tort, like assault or battery, or an auto accident, you would want the one for Answer-Personal Injury, Property Damage, Wrongful Death.
