Legal Question in Civil Litigation in California

I have a friend who borrowed my Playstation 2, 11 games, a T.V., and DVD player, Movies, and my CD collection, to use at his place where he was renting a room. About 6 months later he got kicked out because he couldnt pay his rent. He left, leaving all his belongings and mine.I have asked him to get my things back, but he says the guy who owns the house won't let him get his stuff till he pays him the back rent. I have gone to talk with the owner of the house about getting just my things back and he said I would have to pay him something because he was out all the rent my friend didnt pay. How do I go about getting my things back?

The landlord is not permitted to hold property -- even of the tenant -- in exchange for rent. The landlord has "converted" your property, and a small claims lawsuit by you against your friend's former landlord might just convince him to turn over the stuff.
