Legal Question in Civil Litigation in California
A friend of mine has been receiving threatening emails for a while now. They are coming from someone in another state. She talked to her local police department and they said they would have to extradite the person sending the emails to her home state. Is there anything she can do legally to get the emails to stop?

Can you positively identify this individual? Does this individual reside in California? If so, the person could be sued for stalking, which ought to put a damper on things.
In addition, your friend could file a written complaint with the person's ISP (e-mail carrier), and it could cut off or restrict the person's account.
Your friend can also seek ( and probably get) a restraining order. She may be able to get one locally, but an order from the harasser's local court will probably be more effective. If the emails are coming from someone in Southern California, your friend should feel free to call me to discuss her options.
I agree with my colleagues but write to clarify. The key point is that the action has to be taken in the location where the perpetrator sends the messages. There are many legal options if you can identify and locate the person, and have resources to pursue remedies there.
