For general civil litigation cases, can anything be done about what records are public?

They can be sealed, after a party brings a motion. Courts are extremely reluctant to grant a motion to seal, because court records have a strong presumption and policy for public access. Grounds sometimes include trade secret, or third party privacy, but even in those situations, the court does not seal the entire file.
