Legal Question in Civil Litigation in California

Hired and given hours but no start date
I had problems at a cleaners about a lost jacket of mine when I was asked to find it myself I did. I asked for a discount but instead was given a job. The lady that told me that she would give me a job took down my soc. #, address, telephone number and other personal information. She gave me the days that I would be working and the hours. She said that she would call me and give me a start date. That was in March of this year to this day she has not called me. When I went in and asked about a start day she told me that she was still trying to fit me into her schedule. I could have continued my job search but since she told me that I had the job I stopped looking waiting for her call. If I was take this matter to court could I be compensated for her not giving me a start date and collect from that time to now?
