Legal Question in Civil Litigation in California

Lawsuit - Notify Media

I am being sued (unfairly) by someone who is known in the local entertainment industry. The suit revolves around a business transaction we were both involved in.

The entertainer accosted me at an event we both had a right to be at and heatedly threatened me, trying to get me to back down from my counterclaim. There were witnesses. I filed a report and the police are taking it seriously.

If he gets arrested, or even if he doesnt get arrested, can I notify the local media that this suit exists and the ensuing encounter?

Re: Lawsuit - Notify Media

This would be a great question to ask the attorney who is representing you in the lawsuit.

Mr. Stone beat me to the punch. No lawyer on LawGuru will give you advice on this discussion board regarding the pros and cons. Generally, you should retain a lawyer before going to the media to avoid escalating the suit against you, including potential defamation claims.

The media's impact on the legal process is very complex legal issue involving a lot of careful decisions. Threatening to go to the media can land you in legal trouble, civil and criminal, so you should have an attorney carefully analyze and make these decisions for you. You should consider a countersuit. Send me an email.

Re: Lawsuit - Notify Media

If this suit involves a celebrity, you don't need to leak it to the media. All major news organizations have their worms parked at all courthouses checking the names of litigants on newly filed suits EVERY day.

I agree with others that you should procede after having your case reviewed by a lawyer and based on legal advice.

I've handled many cases with media exposure. Let me know if I can help.
