Legal Question in Civil Litigation in California

We live in Southern California and my daughter is attending San Jose Sate University. My daughter is 18, was arrested for shopllifting at Nordstroms We as her parents recieved a civil demand for $475 stating that we are liable as parents since she is an unemancipaqted minor. Until we received this demand in the mail, more than 2 weeks after the shoplifting incident, we had no idea that she had been arrested for shoplifting

Since she is over 18 she is considered emancipated and thrrefore we as parents are not liable for the $475.

Do I have the correct interpretation?

Apparently the store has no legal authority to demand such payments; write them a note saying that and not to harrass you or your daughter with addlitional communications. But find out what is troubling her to cause her to steal.

You may be right about the emancipation issue but it does not matter.
