Legal Question in Civil Litigation in California

The local sherrif has been trying to serve me papers regarding a civil case that I have no knowlege of. So far they have been unsucsessful. How long do they attempt service before giving up?

They will try to serve you a few times but they will not just give up. They will then serve you by other means, most likely by "publication." This means you will be on notice of a lawsuit against you without ever being handed the papers; plus if you then appear or if a default is taken against you, you will be on the hook for the extra service fees as well. It is alomst always better to accept process and deal with the issue. Avoiding process will only hurt you in the long run.
