Legal Question in Civil Litigation in California
Long Distance Legal Problem
A group of writers from around the world were recently left unpaid for work used by an online magazine. The publisher has not responded to any requests for payment or contacted any of the writers. The money owed is somewhere around $1000 US. None of the writers live in California where the publisher is based (San Diego). The question is there any legal action we can take? We each have a contract with the publisher. According to the website, the publisher does intend to resume publishing in the future.

unpaid writing for online magazine
The first question that would need to be answered is, what does your contract provide (I assume it's a WRITTEN contract) about WHEN you are to be paid for the writing? And are there any contingencies (e.g., only to be paid IF and WHEN your writing appears online, etc.) that need to be met BEFORE payment is to happen?
You can contact me directly for a followup if you'd like -- yours sounds like the kind of dispute that's going to become more and more prevalent in the online workplace, unfortunately . . .
