Legal Question in Civil Litigation in California
I was notified of a class action lawsuit settlement to which I definitely qualify to receive an award.. All I have to do is sign and return it to the class action administrators' P.O Box. However, I am very skeptical and in these scam filled times red flags are not to be ignored, right...Well here are mines..1) sending to a p.o box just seems shady 2) it asks for either my SS# (which I would never do) or my Drivers License#, my printed name and my signature. 3) the document does not have a case number ANYWHERE on it, which REALLLY bugs me. Shouldn't all legal case notifications include a case #??? And lastly, 4) It instructs respondents not to call the court or the defendants..I did my own amateur research and was able to ascertain that a class action case with all the names of all parties involved, does indeed exist. The case # is 07ASO3197 on file in Sacramento County Superior Court. How do I find out if the questionaire asking for my personal info is really legitimate, if not, how do I obtain the form to join the class action, on my own?

With the case number you can access the plaintiffs' counsel's identity, possibly online, and if not online via a request to the court clerk. Their office will tell you if it is legit or not. It sounds fishy to me too, given the lack of case information on the notice.
