If I paid for a friends lawsuit and sign a 50% of settlement contract agreement does the attorney have to pay me from the settlement proceeds?

I would need to know more about the contract. If it is strictly between you and your friend, then the lawyer does not have to -- indeed, must not -- give any of the proceeds to you unless your friend so instructs him. If it is between you, your friend and the lawyer, and if it calls for you to get some of the lawyer's share of the proceeds, then it may be illegal and unenforceable. There are plenty of other possibilities.
