Legal Question in Civil Litigation in California

Parental Obligation

in 1992 I gave guardianship of my 5 year old son to my parents. I have an order appointing guardianship through the courts. Sacramento county is now trying to establish back child support from me (my parents received human assistance for him $367 per month from the time he was 10 until now) am I responsible for this since I signed over guardianship to my parents. He has grown up calling them Mom and Dad.....is there a difference between giving guardianship and signing over parental rights?

Re: Parental Obligation

Yes, you will have to pay. Also, the fact that your parents have bonded with the child creates conflict between you and them, especially when they get old and can no longer care for them.

Damn the California courts for stealing thousands of people's kids and giving them to grandparents whose supervision of the kids is so often limited to sitting on the couch and telling them to go play.

Theoretically there is a difference between guardianship and TPR, but not much of one. The California Supreme Court will decide to what extent guardians are allowed total control over visitation. California parents have fared poorly in the appellate courts and, frankly, I'm not looking forward to the decision.
