Parental Responsibility

My daughter was given keys to a classmate's home by the classmate's mother and told that she could enter anytime while they were away on vacation.

I had no knowledge of my daughter receiving keys or of any agreement.

My daughter (16) thought it would be fun to invite a few friends over. The invite was published and a bunch of kids showed up to party.

Upon the owners return, they noticed that the house had been used to party. They called the police. The police could not find any criminal wrong-doing.

I am not wealthy, barely getting by to make ends meet. This lady seems to want me to accept total cost responsibility for a complete house cleaning. She claims that party people smoked and the smoke has premeated the carpet, drapes and furniture and all must be cleaned.

What is my legal responsibility and/or what is my daughter's legal responsibility?

I wish I could just write a check and be done with it. However, I am without funds and work very hard just to get by. I do not have any property or compensation to offer. What can/should I do?

Just a lady you're not going to pay. Tell her it is her fault for giving children permission to use the apartment was you as a way. Reminder that you do not approve of keys being given to your daughter and it was wrong for this stupid woman to do it behind your back.
