Legal Question in Civil Litigation in California
I posted earlier about being sued for helping my brother-in-law. The response was that I was illegal acting as a lawyer. My intentions was not that I was acting as his lawyer but that I was being sued along with my brother-in-law. Another detail that I left out was that we only filed a report and followed the officer's suggestion. We did not ask the officers to go search for my sister-in-law, the officers offered after we said we tried contacting her for 2 months without an answer but she avoided contact; we never entered the premises the officers went themselves.
Do they have a case against us? If so, would this be considered civil or another kind of lawsuit? I'm trying to find out if they can actually sue us for hundred's of thousands as they said they would; I haven't been served with the papers yet.
