Legal Question in Civil Litigation in California

I recently registered a car with the DMV of California. I did all the required steps, smog, inspection, etc., paid all fees and was sent a registration card. Done deal.

A month later they sent me a letter stating a check was not honored and I owed them

$387 for the registration. It turns out someone who owned the car previously had

bounced a check to them and they are DEMANDING I pay them the money. They won't even give me information about the person that wrote the check. How is it my fault that

someone else bounced a check? I am completely baffled and angry.

It isn't your fault. You will have to schedule an appointment with the DMV, and bring in your pertinent paperwork, including the bill of sale, showing when you purchased the car and that you were not the bad check writer.
